So...

Blog Code

I want to buy a sub for here so bad, but I just spent $940 on plane tickets so that my boyfriend and I can visit home over spring break and I still need to finish up getting my supplies for my classes (which is another $100+tax for a DE-1 board). So I'm feeling kinda poor.

I really need to get around to getting my DE-1 board so I can start living, er... spending time... in the computer labs figuring out how to use VHDL to make the board do cool stuff. I think we made a 2-bit adder in lab the other day, but I wasn't paying much attention beyond the NEAT FLASHY LIGHTS. :B It's actually kind of cool "programming" things on a hardware level and I think I might end up liking the hardware end of computer engineering more than I thought. This http://users.ece.gatech.edu/~hamblen/DE1/DE1.JPG is a DE-1 board, with everything labeled. I srsly want to make it play music. My friend and I were talking about that on our way back to the dorms and she goes "Yeah, I want to make it play music because it'd be better at it than the POS I use now."

Uh, yeah. That's really all I have to say.

Oh, and I'm currently playing LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy. It doesn't seem to exist in the current search/list/thing, so yeah.

Sounds like a really interesting project. What exactly is a DE-1? It looks like a quite small board.

It's basically just a little board where you can write up "code" for it (we're being taught VHDL - VHSIC Hardware Description Language (VHSIC is Very High Speed Integrated Circuits) as well as to use schematics) and make it do various stuff. So we can tell it to connect certain inputs (like the switches on the bottom left of the board) to certain logic gates (AND, OR, NOR, XOR, etc) and have the results sent to certain outputs (like the LEDs above the switches and push buttons).

Not sure if that makes too much sense. =p

Well, I'm sure this stuff'll be around for quite a while. So once you have a life that doesn't completely revolve around this site, you can make some time to play with stuff like this. :B

Mmmmm. RS-232 port. I demand that you post the results of your fiddling with the board, assuming you find the time to leave the lab :B

The lab's connected to the Internet, so even if I can't leave the lab, I can take a few seconds and go online. But I think the lab closes at 6pm anyway, so I can't even forget to have dinner because I'm working on something in there.

It's the Electrical and Computer Engineering Undergrad Lab. :B

It's not open all the time because the engineering building (well, technically there's two of them... but it's almost impossible to tell them apart) gets locked at some point and only sometimes are the front doors left open (so people can use the Software Engineering Lab). The ECE Undergrad Lab also has lots of expensive equipment in it.

I read that as 'underground' first time through. Wondered what kind of Uni you're going to :D

I suppose that makes sense, then. Crazy kids

Some of the schools here do have parts of them underground because it gets so cold. I've been in the University of Rochester's tunnels; they connect all of the academic buildings. My school, however, started off on a really small plot of land in the middle of town, so we think that there were only access tunnels for the steam heating system. The current campus on the edge of town, is all 1940's and newer (none of the academic buildings are older than the 1960's, I think), so there's no cool underground tunnels. :(

Yeah, an underground lab would be pretty neat. But it's also nice to have natural sun helping to light the room. Since I know most of us don't spend that much time outside, lol.

I never believed that, because my head of year once said I've got terminal sunlight deficiency. It makes less sense than a hooker with no genitals, especially considering she told me this when I was stood outside. In the sun.

Well, you can buy this stuff without it being part of some sort of school thing. But apparently the DE-1 boards are normally something like $150 a piece and one of my professors managed to haggle down the price (to $100) if we bought through the school bookstore.
